Virginia Buckner

1980-1982   STATE REGENT'S PROJECT
Florida Cookbook

Florida Daughters Cook, a cookbook, was Mrs. Buckner's State Regent's Project with all proceeds going to the DAR Schools. In recognition of outstanding support of the Golden Rule School Benefit Project, FSSDAR received the second largest number of Golden Rule Benefactor rulers. An innovative first was a scholarship given to a student at Embry Riddle Aeronautical School.

Ruth McGarity

1992-1995   STATE REGENT'S PROJECT
      DAR Schools

Continued support of the DAR Schools was the main project of Mrs. McGarity. The Florida Cottage at Tamassee was purchased, remodeled, refurbished, decorated, and the State Regent's Guest Suite built and elegantly furnished at the rear of the cottage. Decoration of the cottage included a beautiful collection of original paintings by Florida Daughters.  An endowment to support the cottage in future years was established to pay day-to-day expenses such as Teaching Parent’s salary, utilities, insurance, etc. Major expenses such as re-roofing, upgrading to meet current fire safety regulations, and replacement of old broken windows are also paid from this endowment.

She also recommended that the FSSDAR purchase a computer and printer to be used by the State Corresponding Secretary.

Anne Stewart

1995-1997   STATE REGENT'S PROJECT
Historical Markers

Mrs. Stewart chose "Historical Markers for Revolutionary War Sites" as her state project. The Florida State Society approved the placing of Historical Markers for Revolutionary War Sites and so began our quest to honor our patriot ancestors who fought for and won our nation's independence.

The Revolutionary sites were chosen for their historical significance and researched diligently and thoroughly for accuracy.  With the installation and dedication of the markers, the Florida State Society has left a tribute to our Revolutionary War soldiers and patriots.

"Remembering the past is conserving history for the future."

1997-1999   STATE REGENT'S PROJECT
 Twenty-First Century Endowment Fund
Outstanding Junior Travelship Grant

This theme reflected the progressive vision and the professional approach of Mrs. Register's leadership. Both a Twenty-First Century Endowment Fund for Tamassee and an Outstanding Junior Travelship Grant were created in addition to the continued placement of historical markers throughout the state of Florida. Also, extensive work was done on the Florida Cottage at Tamassee.

Jeanette Frey

1999-2001   STATE REGENT’S PROJECT
Jeanette J. Frey Scholarship Fund
Frey Grits and Gravy Endowment

Because of her commitment to education and our DAR Schools, Mrs. Frey chose the Jeanette J. Frey Scholarship Fund, an endowed scholarship for worthy Florida students, and the Frey Grits and Gravy Fund for the general fund of our DAR Schools.

The Grits & Gravy Fund proceeds go to KDS, Hillside, Hindman, Berry, and Crossnore.  Also established as part of her Grits & Gravy Project is the Martha Bell Elias - Treasure Coast Memorial Endowment Fund, with the proceeds going to the Tamassee General Fund.  Mr. Elias established this fund in memory of his wife Martha Bell, a devoted DAR member.  He has added a substantial amount to it since its establishment.

Mary Lou James

2001-2003   STATE REGENT'S PROJECT
1900 Census Soundex ~ Millennium Forest

To help increase our membership, Mrs. James' State Regent's Project was purchasing the 1900 Census Soundex for our DAR Collection housed in the Orange County Public Library in Orlando.  This index helps fill in the family research between the 1850 census and 1900 census and is ongoing and not limited to DAR members only.

The "Millennium Forest, The Silent Sentinels," was another project during the James Administration.  The planting of these trees recognized the patriot ancestors of FSSDAR Daughters who contributed to the reforestation.  It continues the FSSDAR history of conservation and commitment to our original Penny Pines Forest.  Forest planting began in 2003 and continued through 2006.  Eight thousand trees have been planted as the forest is returned to its native habitat.  The names and a statement of each patriot honored have been published as a book.

Jean Mann

2003-2005   STATE REGENT’S PROJECT
FSSDAR Scholarship Fund

The Florida State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has always been interested in the education of our youth. We are classified as an “education” entity for federal and state tax purposes in meeting the criteria of a non-profit organization.

To continue our commitment to the education of our future leaders, Mrs. Mann established a FSSDAR Scholarship Fund with a minimum endowed funding of $100,000.

Contributions to this Fund allowed participation by all chapters and members, as well as interested friends of FSSDAR who share our commitment to the future.

Rebecca  Lockhart
2005-2007   STATE REGENT’S PROJECT
Continuing Past State Regents' Projects
Tamassee Scholarship Fund
Kate Duncan Smith Scholarship Fund

During this administration, we continued with established projects to dream the dreams of our past, as we Rang the Bell of Freedom by giving students the ability to follow their dreams with scholarships for continuing education, provided students with a warm and loving home, supported our own young women with funds to travel to our national conferences; while also continuing many other projects established within each local chapter, as well as the Florida State Society.
